A Florida activist wants Memorial Day to be a time of burning the Confederate flag.
So much for graveyard visits to honor America’s war dead, or even summery barbecues in the backyard – an activist from Florida has what he thinks is a better way to recognize the solemn occasion known as Memorial Day: burn flags.
John Sims from southern Florida is leading up a nationwide effort to change Memorial Day into Confederate flag-burning day, Think Progress reported. Just a few weeks ago, he organized 13 separate flag-burning events in the 13 states formerly known as the Confederacy, telling the International Business Times in the process that “the Confederate flag is the N-word on a pole.”
Now, he’s offering “Burn and Bury” kits via Internet downloads for those who can’t afford to buy a Confederate banner to burn.
“[Southern heritage groups’ have failed to recognize the unredeemable nature of the Confederate flag as symbol of Southern heritage,” Sims said, to Think Progress. “And to deny this flag’s connection to American white supremacy and fear of the loss of white privilege is insane. I challenge the Sons of Confederate Veterans to come correct and acknowledge that the Confederate flag should be retired as an artifact. And after that, they should help advocate for reparations for slavery.”
Sims also said he wants “Burn and Bury Memorial Day” to “ritualistically confront through reflection and catharsis, the pain and trauma of a very horrific part of American history,” the news blog Mic reported.
As part of his campaign, he’s created a “Burn and Bury” remix music video that shows a burning Confederate flag and speaks of “haunted times” of “race and blackness … tricking our best minds.”
