Rubio on national TV: Yes, I support Trump

Sen. Marco Rubio, whose presence on the presidential campaign trail proved at times to be a fiery thorn in the side of Donald Trump – who referred to the Floridian with the mocking monikers, “Little Marco” and “con artist” – has now come out in support of the billionaire businessman, telling Jake Tapper of CNN he would even speak in the candidate’s favor at the looming GOP convention.

Rubio, in a somewhat shocking turn-around, now says he only wants to be “helpful” to Trump.

He also said his support for the candidate doesn’t necessarily mean he’s 100 percent on board with all of Trump’s policies.

“I spent 11 months talking about [our policy differences] so I think they’re well understood,” Rubio said. “That said, I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be president. … If there’s something I can do to help that from happening and it’s helpful to the cause, I most certainly would be honored to be considered for that.”

Rubio quit his presidential run in March after losing badly to Trump in his own home state of Florida.

It’s not clear what Rubio’s political future holds. He said earlier this week it was “unlikely” he would seek Senate re-election, despite the urging of fellow Republicans, Politico reported.

“Look, I enjoy serving with my colleagues,” Rubio said, Politico reported. “I respect them very much. I’ll always listen to what they have to say. But I don’t think anything’s going to change [about my running].”

The deadline for him to file for the seat is June 24.

“The Florida Senate seat is the big enchilada,” said the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s top political strategist, Scott Reed, in an interview with Politico. “Florida has a late filing deadline, late primary and a sprint to November. It’s raising a real concern. The five candidates, all of whom are working hard, are not breaking through. We worry about holding on to this seat.”
