Ryan leads pro-Trump challenger by 73 points

House Speaker Paul Ryan

Rep. Paul Ryan, who was just a few short weeks ago the target of widespread Republican criticisms for his outright refusal to endorse Donald Trump – despite the fact the billionaire businessman then stood and now stands alone in his race to the GOP’s White House nomination – is nonetheless trouncing a primary challenger to his House seat, by double-digit margins.

A new Washington Free Beacon poll puts Ryan easily ahead of his businessman challenger, Paul Nehlen, 80 to 7 percentage points. Nehlen is a tea party favorite who’s blasted Ryan in recent weeks for failing to endorse Trump.

“Paul Ryan is right at the head of a small group of party elites who continue to tell the American people they know better,” Nehlen said, in early May, Politico reported. “He’s demonstrated that he’s not the unifier he claims. If he were a unifier, he would look for ways to work with the candidate [Trump] that the American people have chosen in state after state.”

Nehlen’s numbers are somewhat surprising, given the backing he’s received from high-profile conservatives like Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and vice presidential contender, and given Trump’s own blasting of Ryan for the no-go on the endorsement – which would seem to align the two businessmen, at least in some voters’ minds.

But a Vox Populi Polling survey shows similarly – that Paul is blasting past Nehlen, and it’s looking like the lead’s going to stay. Vox numbers show Ryan not only winning the primary against Nehlen, but the general in November, sending him into another term on Capitol Hill.

Specifically, the numbers put Ryan with a near-73 percentage point lead over Nehlen and a near-20 point lead over whichever Democratic candidate he might face in the general.

“It’s remarkable how well positioned Speaker Ryan is for re-election this year,” said Vox Populi Pollster Michael Meyers. “Looking at the results, it is clear that Ryan’s opponent is not mounting a credible primary challenge and in the general election Ryan’s numbers are incredibly strong.”

Ryan is polling in Vox particularly well with independent voters, carrying about twice as many as his contenders, and also leads with every age group, and with both men and women.
