Mike Huckabee
Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor and ex-presidential candidate, said Sen. Ted Cruz needs to win Indiana’s primary or face facts that he should drop his presidential run.
“Indiana Republicans [will] vote in a primary that’s make-or-break for Ted Cruz,” he said, in a post on his website, MikeHuckabee.com.
Huckabee went on: “He’s already been mathematically eliminated (there aren’t enough delegates left for him to reach 1,237, even if he won them all). But winning Indiana’s winner-take-all race could slow Trump’s momentum and keep him from reaching the magic number, too.”
Huckabee said no matter what, Trump will head to the convention with hundreds of more delegates to his name than any other candidate. And that means: Even if Cruz were to take Indiana, his chances for securing the nomination seemed slim-to-none, mostly because of the controversy that would erupt.
“If party leaders deny [Trump] the nomination, that will kick a whole different hornet’s nest,” Huckabee wrote. “And if they won’t give the nomination to the delegate leader, why would they give it to Cruz, who has far fewer delegates and isn’t that much more popular with party elites than Trump is?”
Huckabee referred to Cruz’s “valuable endorsement” from Indiana’s governor, Mike Pence, but then pointed to the blunting of that backing after Pence actually gave high kudos to Trump in his speech.
Huckabee then acknowledged that basketball legend Bobby Knight’s endorsement of Trump was a real boon.
“If endorsements still influence voters (a questionable premise), Trump may have the high card with his endorsement from former Indiana Hoosiers coach Bobby Knight,” he wrote. “As a former governor myself, I have to admit that if any candidate in Arkansas had a choice between my endorsement or a nod from the coach of the Razorbacks, they’d be crazy to pick me.”
His post came just hours before Trump received the backing of another Indiana sports legend, Lou Holtz, of Notre Dame football coaching fame, as WND reported.
Recent polls put Trump in the lead and over Cruz in Indiana’s contest by as much as 15 percentage points, a massive change from a few weeks ago when pundits generally saw the state as a real battleground between the top two candidates.
