Security workers and baggage handlers at two of the nation’s main ports – New York’s John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia – are set to strike Wednesday evening over pay issues.

Airport officials are downplaying the strike, saying it shouldn’t affect service.

“We have plans in place with our customers and the Port Authority and we don’t anticipate any significant airport operations disruptions,” said Craig Coy, chief executive officer for Command Security, Reuters reported.

He said only about 250 workers are going to strike for an unknown amount of time.

Fox News, meanwhile, said the strike, which is due to last 24 hours, could include about 1,000 people. And Delta Air Lines Inc. said it was taking precautions to make sure passengers weren’t unduly delayed.

“[We’re] taking measures to ensure that our more than 35,000 customers booked through LaGuardia on Thursday are not affected,” the company said in a statement, Reuters reported.

Robert Mann, aviation industry consultant, warned the strike could “be along the lines of a localized weather event,” Reuters reported.
