Romney attacks Cruz on Iran

WASHINGTON  Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he is opposed to the Iran deal but he is attacking current presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, for his criticism of the agreement.

Furthermore, Romney is attacking Cruz for making an accusation that the administration has not disproved, and has apparently even confirmed.

Iran will receive 56-to-150 billion dollars (estimates vary) in assets that will be unfrozen, in exchange for making a nuclear deal with the Obama administration  the so-called signing bonus.

On Tuesday Cruz said, “If this deal is consummated, it will make the Obama administration the world’s leading financier of radical Islamic terrorism.”

“Billions of dollars under control of this administration will flow into the hands of jihadists who will use that money to murder Americans, to murder Israelis, to murder Europeans.”

On Thursday, Romney tweeted, “I am opposed to the Iran deal, but @SenTedCruz is way over the line on the Obama terrorism charge. Hurts the cause.”

However, the administration has already admitted it is powerless to stop Cruz’s prediction from becoming a reality.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice had this exchange with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer July 15:

Blitzer: Now, I just want to be precise. So there’s really – once the money starts flowing in, it’s their money, correctly, as I pointed out and as you pointed out, it’s their money, what they could do with it whatever they want. If they want to give a billion dollars in weapons to Bashar al-Assad or a billion dollars to Houthi rebels in Yemen. …

Rice: No, they can’t – they can’t do that, Wolf, because they’ll still be under an arms embargo that would prevent them from sending weapons anywhere.

Blitzer: Well, what if they’re not sending weapons? What if they’re just sending money?

Rice: Well, they may be able to send money, yes.

Rice essentially admitted the Obama deal will give Iran access to up to $150 billion to spend as it wishes and would do nothing to stop the Islamic Republic from sending windfalls to its terrorist proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and throughout the Middle East, North Africa and perhaps even the Americas.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew testified before Congress Tuesday that Iran would probably get “only” $56 billion once the deal is closed, not the full $150 billion that has been reported, at least, not right away.

To put that kind of money in perspective, Rep. Theodore Deutch, R-Fla., observed, “It’s been reported that $200 million a year is the amount that they (Iran) use to fund Hezbollah.

“So if only $1 billion of the $56 billion were to go to Hezbollah, we would double the amount of support for five years, at which time the arms embargo comes off, and they’re considerably more dangerous. We have to at least acknowledge that that’s a concern.”

Secretary of State John Kerry dodged the point, replying, “Congressman, we can put the arms – there are plenty of opportunities to deal with the arms.”
