Are dead people voting in this Mississippi county?

The Election Commission of Clarke County, Mississippi, has been handed a lawsuit for allegedly preserving more voters on its rolls than there are real, live people in the county.

The Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), a nonprofit elections watchdog, filed suit against the commission in federal court this week for maintaining “implausible” voter rolls.

According to the complaint, there were nearly 100 more voters on the county’s rolls than there are eligible, voting-age, living people in the county. That doesn’t even factor in the actual number of eligible people who have actually registered to vote.

“Voter rolls maintained by the Defendant for Clarke County contain more voters registered to vote than citizens eligible to vote. In March 2015 … Clarke County, Mississippi had 12,646 registered voters, despite having a voting age population of only 12,549 according to the United States Census. More than 100 percent of living citizens old enough to vote were registered to vote in Clarke County in 2015,” the complaint reads.

In a Web post announcing the suit, PILF said the problems in Clarke County are chronic and that the Obama administration is at least partially to blame.

“This enforcement action is the first case in the Public Interest Legal Foundation’s efforts to clean corrupted voter rolls around the nation ahead of the 2016 Presidential election,” PILF wrote. “The Obama Justice Department has shut down enforcement of Section 8 of the NVRA and thus allowed voters rolls around the nation to remain corrupted and filled with ineligible registrations. The plaintiff, through lawyers in this case, have brought similar lawsuits and obtained consent decrees against other Mississippi counties for corrupted voter rolls.”

Mitt Romney won Clarke County in the 2012 presidential election, taking 61.3 percent of the popular vote to Barack Obama’s 37.4 percent.
