The guy behind the Transformers movies is making a major Benghazi film

Director Michael Bay is sort of the Double Down sandwich of the filmmaking world. He doesn’t know how to not go big. His movies are excessive, frenetic and unapologetically preposterous in their outsized scaling of cinematic action. You have to consume them in big, indulgent bites.

If you’re unfamiliar with Bay’s films (which is unlikely), here’s a montage.

Now he’s making a film about the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. It’s called “13 Hours” and it’s set to be released mid-January.

That date roughly coincides with last year’s wide release of “American Sniper,” a film that hit upon an oft-ignored demographic: traditional-values, American moviegoers, who unleashed their untapped and voracious appetite for a refreshingly respectful treatment of U.S.-themed military drama. That film’s to-date box office is enormous, having amassed more than half a billion dollars worldwide and $350 million in the U.S.

Here’s a trailer for the new film, released by Paramount on Wednesday:

Beyond the melodrama in the trailer, we have no idea how Bay’s Benghazi film will play, tone-wise. It’s based on the nonfiction book of the same name, written by Mitchell Zuckoff, which tells its story from an on-the-ground point of view.

But if the trailer is anything to go by, we’re unlikely to see a lot of noble, distant secretaries of state weeping over the futility of Wanting So Badly To Help And Being Unable; or of local attackers fueled with a bloodlust to exact revenge over a YouTube video.

The New York Post on Wednesday called “13 Hours” “The movie Hillary Clinton should be very, very worried about.”

That’s because, however great or small the film’s emphasis on the motivations for the attack or its politically charged aftermath, it places the Benghazi scandal back in a very bright public spotlight.

“… Hillary Clinton wants everyone to shut up about the basic intelligence and security failure that was Benghazi, and that it was all, ultimately, her responsibility,” wrote the Post’s Kyle Smith. “’13 Hours’ means Benghazi isn’t going to go away.”
