An Omaha police officer with seven years of experience was killed in a shootout with a suspect, just a day before she was due to bring her prematurely born baby home from the hospital and take maternity leave.
Kerrie Orozco, 29, had delivered Olivia Ruth in February, but the baby was born early and needed to stay in the hospital for constant care. She was due to be sent home Thursday.
But on Wednesday afternoon, Orozco was involved in a shootout with a suspect, and was killed at the scene.
Authorities say the shooting suspect, Marcus Wheeler, 26, was a gang member, the Washington Post reported. He died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the shootout.
“She’s a tremendous officer and an even better person,” said Omaha police chief Todd Schmaderer, the Washington Post reported. “She was a friend, popular officer, top-notch person and I just can’t imagine that this has ever happened.”
Officer Down Memorial Page reports Orozco is the 12th police officer to have been shot and killed by a suspect since January.
