George Pataki
Former New York Gov. George Pataki jumped into the Republican race for the White House via a video message released online Thursday.
“Washington has grown too big, too powerful, too expensive and too intrusive,” he said, with images of the New York skyline in the background. “It is time to stand up, protect our freedom and take back this government.”
The “Pataki for President” candidate served as a governor for three consecutive terms – a sizeable feat, given the Democratic nature of New York.
His video message wraps with a shot of him overlooking the World Freedom Tower, a subtle reminder of his leadership during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the Twin Towers.
“That’s exactly what we hoped,” Pataki said, during the shot, “that we would not just rebuild what was here but build higher and taller and soar to new heights, and show people we weren’t going to think small or live afraid.”
Pataki is joining a crowded Republican field that includes Sens. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio; former business executive Carly Fiorina; former Gov. Mike Huckabee, former Sen. Rick Santorum, and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Largely expected to join the race are former Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, as well as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Sen. Lindsey Graham, Lousiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and possibly, businessman Donald Trump.
Pataki is due to speak Thursday from New Hampshire.
