A mother and her 7-year-old son were shot and killed in Baltimore, bringing the total of fatal shootings in the city this month to 38 – the most since 1996.

More than 100 have been killed in the city this year, and some in the city are starting to wonder why police don’t seem so visible on streets or proactive in addressing crime these days, the Baltimore Sun reported.

In the latest gun-related incident, Jennifer Jeffrey Browne, 31, and her son Kester “Tony” Browne were shot point blank in their heads in a neighborhood in Southwest Baltimore, CBS reported.

Neighbors reacted with outrage and shock, while law enforcement officials pleaded with the public to help identify the suspects.

“Who can do this? What kind of person is he?” asked neighbor Donald Barber, CBS reported.

And Sgt. Jarron Jackson, with the Baltimore City Police Department, said: “I’m begging anyone who has any piece of information, please call us. Please give us whatever you have so we can bring closure to this victim’s family.”

Political leaders, meanwhile, expressed regret at the double-murder and the ongoing violence – but dug in deep on taking any blame.

“As a mom, I can’t even imagine the pain of that loss, to lose a son and his mother,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, CBS reported. “It’s a terrible blow for that family.”

Just hours earlier, Rawlings-Blake shut down questioning from a Fox News reporter who insisted she address the matter of the city’s growing violence, and whether police were reacting to her order, in the wake of Freddie Gray’s death, for officers to give protesters room and opportunity to rally. Rawlings-Blake has steadfastly refused to take responsibility for that order, at one point denying she ever told police to stand down.

But in the wake of growing gun-related crime in the city, some police officials speaking anonymously to various media outlets have confirmed officers are in fact reluctant to address crime and apprehend the criminal element because of the worry of political backlash.
