President Obama took time off his Democratic Party fundraising schedule to stop at the home of the parents and sister of American journalist Steven Sotloff, who was beheaded by ISIS terrorists last year.
The meeting wasn’t on the president’s public schedule, the New York Post reported. It came amid two Democratic Party fundraisers in Florida and a visit to the National Hurricane Center.
During the stop, Obama expressed remorse at Sotloff’s death and said he “appreciated the chance to hear from the Sotloffs more about Steven’s work as a journalist, including his passion for bringing the stories of people who are suffering to the rest of the world,” said Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, the New York Post reported.
Sotloff family spokesman Barak Barfi said shortly after the ISIS beheading that relatives didn’t believe the White House “was doing anything to help us” and had actively campaigned against the sending of any ransom payments, the newspaper reported.
U.S. law bars citizens from paying ransoms to overseas terror groups.
