President Obama’s months-long vision for re-established U.S.-Cuba relations reached fruition Friday as the State Department announced the removal of the communist country from its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The announcement culminates an order Obama put in place in December, when he first announced his intent to Congress to smooth relations with Cuba. Sens. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, presidential hopefuls for the Republican Party, have both maintained opposition in the move but did not formally launch a campaign to derail Obama.

Get “Schmoozing with Terrorists” by WND Jerusalem bureau chief Aaron Klein, who confronts terrorists whose stated goal is the annihilation of the United States.

“The rescission of Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism reflects our assessment that Cuba meets the statutory criteria for rescission,” the State Department said in a statement, reported by Politico. “While the United States has significant concerns and disagreements with a wide range of Cuba’s policies and actions, these fall outside the criteria relevant to the rescission of a state sponsor of terrorism designation.”

Cuba and America haven’t had diplomatic ties in 50-plus years and the island nation has been on the United States’ list of state sponsors of terror since 1982. Removing the island from the list allows it to take advantage of foreign aid, defense sales and other economic opportunities.

Cuban and American officials are finishing the details of the deal, with plans to open embassies in each others’ nations.
