Finally – a Republican who’s not running for president. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence indirectly announced through his spokesman he’s not going to seek the White House office in 2016, and instead will be making a reelection run for his executive state seat.
“Gov. Mike Pence is a conservative leader and dedicated public servant who always puts Indiana first,” Indiana Republican Party chairman Jeff Cardwell said to the Indianapolis Star. “We are excited the governor will formally announce his plans to seek reelection during our annual Spring Dinner, and we look forward to hearing his ideas for the future of our great state.”
Indiana bars political candidates from running for two offices at the same time, so Cardwell’s statement is an unstated admission Pence isn’t running for the presidency.
Pence has 12 years of service in the House of Representatives and has made a strong conservative mark as governor, leading many to press him to run for the White House.
The GOP field is already crowded and includes Sens. Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Lindsey Graham; Former business executive Carly Fiorina; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Others who’ve hinted at entering the race include businessman Donald Trump, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
