Louisiana legislation would teach schoolchildren gun safety

Following the unspeakable tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, gun control advocates have routinely attempted to promote anti-2nd Amendment legislation as necessary to protect children in the U.S. A new bill making its way through the Louisiana Legislature represents one of the few genuine efforts to do just that.

The GOP legislation, H.B. 446, would allow for public schools in the state to set aside time and resources to teach students gun safety lessons modeled on the National Rifle Association’s Eddie Eagle GunSafe program.

“The goal is to save children’s lives and protect our youth,” said Louisiana Rep. Blake Miguez (R-Erath), the legislation’s sponsor.

Miguez, who was elected to the state legislature during a special election in February, is a firearm enthusiast who was once a contestant on the History Channel shooting competition “Top Shot.”

His legislation sailed through the state’s GOP-controlled House in a 93-3 vote this week and will now make its way to the Louisiana Senate. An earlier version of the bill would have required the firearm safety classes for elementary school students and only authorized use of the NRA program. The legislation was amended to pass committee.

While the bill is unsurprisingly popular with Republicans, some Democrats have expressed concerns that the firearm safety education could create problems for children whose parents don’t acknowledge the existence of guns.

“There any many parents who don’t even allow their children to touch a gun or even see a gun,” state Rep. Barbara Norton (D-Shreveport) said in opposition to the legislation.

The illogical opposition to teaching children how to avoid firearm accidents isn’t shocking, considering how the anti-gun left routinely insists that no amount of training or parental responsibility regarding firearms in the home will prevent tragedies. The message from groups like Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety is pretty clear: If you keep a gun in the house, your child will find it and something bad will happen.

That’s the gist of this video from the organization:

Regardless of how the anti-gun crowd feels, firearms do exist. And millions of Americans own them. That’s not going to change anytime soon. The biggest component to halting child firearm accidents is responsible gun ownership. Adults should always consider the worst-case scenario when storing a firearm in the home. And while educating children about firearm safety is no substitute for making responsible choices as a gun owner, it certainly can’t hurt to teach children to respect firearms for the deadly weapons that they are.
