Speaker Paul Ryan
Can you say awkward? Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday was forced to publicly double down on an unpopular stance – his announced refusal to endorse Donald Trump, despite the candidate’s lone stand in the Republican field – when reports of his supposed reconsideration made the media headlines, and aides had to come out and say: These reports aren’t true.
Through an aide, Ryan clarified he’s still not endorsing Trump for president.
“Hey folks – just an FYI that reports this morning of imminent political news from Paul are not true,” said Brendan Buck, a top Ryan aide, in a memo distributed to colleagues, Politico reported. “Just bad reporting. Carry on, and happy Wednesday.
In the hours before the memo was distributed, a variety of media outlets reported the speaker was poised to finally give his backing to Trump.
ABC News, for instance, ran this headline: “Paul Ryan to Endorse Donald Trump, According to Senior Campaign Sources.”
And Bloomberg rang this: “Ryan Said to Tell Confidants He’s Ready to End Trump Impasse.”
But the reporting is all false, said AshLee Strong, another Ryan spokesperson.
“There’s no update and we’ve not told the Trump campaign to expect an endorsement,” she said, Politico reported. “He’s also not told anyone he regrets anything.”
As WND previously reported, Ryan came under fire in mid-May from Republican faithfuls who saw his refusal to endorse Trump, the sole Republican Party candidate for president, a slap in the face to voters.
Outraged constituents started a petition to force Ryan from his chairman spot at the Republican National Convention, and it didn’t take long for the drive to gross more than 15,000 signatures. Ryan responded by saying he would resign his post if Trump asked – and Trump responded by saying he wasn’t sure if he was ready to support the Wisconsin lawmaker’s congressional agenda.
