Even a brainiac like theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has his intellectual limits, it seems. In an interview from London, the University of Cambridge professor admitted he was stumped by Donald Trump’s popularity – that he couldn’t, for the life of him, understand why the billionaire businessman’s message was resonating so well with voters.
“I can’t,” Hawking said, in answer to a blunt query for him to explain Trump’s appeal, NBC News reported.
His views of the candidate?
“He is a demagogue who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator,” Hawking said.
Hawking was diagnosed in 1963 with motor neurone disease, and is confined to a wheelchair, but has nevertheless gone on to become one of the world’s premier scientists.
His views and beliefs are oftentimes controversial, however. On climate change, for instance, he says this: “The more immediate danger [than an asteroid hitting Earth] is runaway climate change. A rise in ocean temperatures will melt the ice caps and cause the release of large amounts of carbon dioxide from the ocean floor,” he said, in an interview with ITV News.
