President Obama, during a Thursday press conference in Japan, took potshots at Donald Trump and said the billionaire businessman’s run for the White House has set leaders around the world on edge – and “for good reason,” he said.
“They are not sure how seriously to take some of his pronouncements,” Obama said, NBC News reported, “but they’re rattled by him – and for good reason, because a lot of the proposals that he’s made display either ignorance of world affairs or a cavalier attitude.”
Obama then characterized Trump as simply a showboat, not a true political contender, pointing to the candidate’s busy Twitter site as proof.
“[He’s more into] getting tweets and headlines [than] actually thinking through” America’s needs, and what would keep the “world on an even keel,” Obama said.
Among some of Trump’s racier comments that have rocked national and global headlines: His call for a temporary ban on Muslim entry into the United States, to allow federal border officials time to properly assess security risks. His call for a wall to be constructed on the southern border – and for Mexico to pay for it. And his many statements about the need for America to take a more aggressive approach with trade deals with other nations, and in particular, to reel in China on the economic front.
He went on, CNN reported: “The world pays attention to U.S. elections. They pay more attention to our elections sometimes than we pay to theirs. The U.S. is … at the heart of the international order and even those countries that are critical of us … know that ultimately things don’t hold together so well if the U.S. isn’t making good decisions and they count on us to provide stability when making global decisions.”
