Obama disses border wall, America’s ‘good old days’

President Obama in a commencement speech to Rutgers University graduates took on Donald Trump’s signature platform – the building of a border wall – and without mentioning the candidate by name, called such notions unworkable.

He also took a swipe at those who look fondly back on America’s past, wishing for a return for better cultural and political times.

“Guess what,” he said, speaking of those who wax nostalgic about the “good old days” in the United States, the Washington Post reported. “It ain’t so. … Take it with a grain of salt.”

But he devoted much more time to smashing Trump’s ideas of national security, which includes a border wall and scrutiny for Muslims trying to enter the United States.

He said: “A wall won’t stop [change]. … The point is, to help ourselves, we’ve got to help others – not pull up the drawbridge and try to keep the world out.”

He also attacked, without mentioning names, positions furthered by Trump on the campaign trail that deal with trade and immigration.

“The world is more interconnected than ever before,” Obama said, Politico reported. “Isolating or disparaging Muslims, suggesting that they should be treated differently when it comes to entering this country – that is not just a betrayal of our values – that’s not just a betrayal of who we are, it would alienate the very communities at home and abroad who are our most important partners in the fight against violent extremism.”

Obama then went on to paint the political scene on the presidential campaign trail and in present day politics in general as devoid of intellectualism.

“So, class of 2016, let me be as clear as I can be,” he said. “In politics and in life, ignorance is not a virtue. It’s not cool to not know what you’re talking about. It’s not ‘keeping it real’ or ‘telling it like it is.’ It’s not challenging political correctness. That’s just not knowing what you’re talking about. And yet, we’ve become confused about this.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who’s endorsed Trump, wasn’t present for the remarks but instead watching his son’s baseball game at nearby Princeton University.
