Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas
Even when Donald Trump is not on the stage, he’s still the center of attention.
With the very first question of Thursday night’s GOP presidential debate, Fox News moderator Megyn Kelly brought up “the elephant not in the room tonight – Donald Trump.”
Rather than take part in the debate, the Republican frontrunner chose to hold his own veterans rally across town. Kelly asked Sen. Ted Cruz what message Trump’s absence sent to the voters of Iowa.
After thanking the people of Iowa for the “seriousness” with which they have approached the election process, Cruz had some fun at Trump’s expense.
“Now secondly, let me say I’m a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly, and Ben, you’re a terrible surgeon,” Cruz joked. “Now that we’ve gotten the Donald Trump portion out of the way…”
He was interrupted by laughter and applause from the audience, then continued: “I want to thank everyone here for showing the men and women of Iowa the respect to show up and make the case to the people of this state and the people of this country why each of us believe we would make the best commander-in-chief.”
