Michael Savage: Dems laughing at GOP civil war

The battle for the Republican presidential nomination between Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, amounts to a conflict between purists and pragmatists, and it’s only the pragmatists who stand a chance of winning the general election, argues talk-radio host Michael Savage.

In a monologue posted on his website, Savage said the Democrats “are laughing because they see the entire Republican party split in two, with the purists attacking the pragmatists, and the pragmatists mocking the purists.”

“Of course we would all like a purist candidate,” Savage said. “However most every election in the past has been lost on the Republican side by purist candidates who did not appeal to the masses.”

Savage, an avid supporter of Trump, said he considers himself a pragmatist “after seeing what purists have gotten politically, which is near zero.”

“Purists have rarely elected anyone. Ever. And they will not in 2016,” he said.

He compared the divide between purists and pragmatists to the schisms within religions, such as in the Jewish faith, “where you have the ultra-Orthodox purists vs. the reform movement, and the conservative reform movement, which are the pragmatists modifying the religion to appeal to a larger mass of people.”

“There’s an adage in biology that I learned in high school, which goes like this: ‘Adapt or die,’” he said.

“Either you want to wind up stuck in amber with your purist philosophy, or you want to go on and adapt and evolve.”

He explained that it doesn’t mean all beliefs must be compromised, but “it means you have to compromise some of your beliefs.”

“That is true politically as well as it is with a mate, or with a career … adapt or die.”

Savage said that, as a pragmatist, the reason he backs Trump is that while “he may be seen as a social liberal to so many purists,” there’s no other candidate as likely to be effective on issues that are “fundamentally important to the survival of America”: defense, border security and immigration.

“He’s a deal-maker,” Savage said of the real estate billionaire. “Even if the purist candidate should win, it would not be gridlock in Congress; it would be the end of Congress. There would be no movement whatsoever. There would be a logjam for the next four years. There would be constant partisan warfare.”

During that time, he said, ISIS “would continue to metastasize into a greater cancer.”

“Tens of millions of immigrants would continue to pour in over the border,” Savage said. “We cannot afford gridlock. We cannot afford a logjam. That is why I’m a pragmatist.”

Trump has been a regular guest on Savage’s nationally syndicated show. In an interview Tuesday, Trump chastised European leaders for not following his lead on the Muslim refugee crisis.
