Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum will scurry over to Donald Trump’s fundraiser for veterans after Fox News’ undercard debate Thursday night.

Trump’s decision to essentially offer an alternative to Fox’s 9 p.m. debate offers the two struggling candidates a shot at increased media exposure while simultaneously bringing more attention to veterans issues. The event will be held at the Sheslow Auditorium at Drake University at 7 p.m. EST. CNN, CBS and YouTube have all decided to broadcast the event here, here and here.
A Monmouth University Poll of likely Iowa Republican caucusgoers released Tuesday shows Trump still dominating his rivals. The billionaire earns 30 percent support compared to 23 percent for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Huckabee garners 3 percent and Santorum does not crack 1 percent.
“After the #GOPDebate I’ll join @realDonald Trump in Des Monines to support our vets who’ve been abandoned by @BarackObama,” Huckabee tweeted Monday. “Hope you’ll join us.”
John Brabender, Santorum’s top strategist, told the New York Times his boss was honored to “help support our veterans.”
Fox CEO Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly both tried to get Trump to reconsider his decision to forego the debate over the past 48 hours, but to no avail. At issue was the decision by the network to release a press release on Tuesday that mocked the Republican front-runner.
“We learned from a secret back channel that the Ayatollah and Putin both intend to treat Donald Trump unfairly when they meet with him if he becomes president,” Fox’s statement read. “A nefarious source tells us that Trump has his own secret plan to replace the Cabinet with his Twitter followers to see if he should even go to those meetings.”
“Will you just consider?” asked O’Reilly during an interview with Trump Wednesday night. “Say, ‘Look, I might come back.’ Forgive. Go forward. Answer the questions. Look out for the folks. I just want you to consider it.”
The billionaire said there must be consequences as a result of “the stupidity of Fox and what they did.”
Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has invited all interested television networks to live-stream the fundraiser and predicted it would attract higher ratings than Fox’s debate.
