Billionaire businessman and presidential hopeful Donald Trump issued a sharp rebuke against NBC for booting his pageants from the network, calling the decision “weak and foolish” and threatening to sue.
The network announced Monday it would not honor contracts with Trump to show the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants, after the presidential candidate remarked on Mexico sending rapists and other criminals across the border to the United States.
Univision responded by breaking ties with Trump. Now, NBC has done the same – and Trump is decrying the company’s hypocrisy to broadcast news anchor Brian Williams, who was caught lying while on the job.
“If NBC is so weak and so foolish to not understand the serious illegal immigration problem in the United States, coupled with the horrendous and unfair trade deals we are making with Mexico, then their contract violating closure of Miss Universe/Miss USA will be determined in court,” he said, in a statement reported by Reuters. “Furthermore, they will stand behind lying Brian Williams, but won’t stand behind people that tell it like it is, as unpleasant as that may be.”
Trump also said his relationship with NBC had been “great,” at least until he announced he was running for president.
“I just told them I cannot do ‘The Apprentice’ because of the fact that I’m running,” Trump said. “They were not happy with this and now, with my statements on immigration, which happen to be correct, they are going to take a different stance. That’s okay.”
In a statement released Monday, NBC said: “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump. At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values.”
Now, MoveOn.org is pressuring Macy’s to drop Trump’s line of ties from its stores, Fox News reported.
