John Kasich
Ohio Gov. John Kasich is set to announce a presidential run on July 21, joining a crowded field of Republicans that already includes 13.
Kasich, 63, won his governor reelection by a landslide in November and campaign advisers say he’s now hoping to turn that momentum into support as a presidential candidate positioned “in Jeb’s back right pocket,” Politico reported. In other words, the news outlet said, he’s hoping to be seen as a candidate who brings out the establishment voters, like former Gov. Jeb Bush, but also those of more conservative bent.
As WND previously reported, however, Kasich faces an uphill battle with his hoped-for conservative base. In January, those on the right issued sharp criticisms against the governor for his open support of Common Core.
He said in January on Fox News of the education policy: “In my state of Ohio, we want higher standards for our children, and those standards are set and the curriculum is set by local school board. [W]e have a problem with the education standards and our children’s ability to compete in the world … I don’t know how anybody can disagree with this, unless you’re running for something.”
Kasich also responded to the Supreme Court’s ruling on gay marriage with somewhat of a shake of the shoulders, saying it’s time for the country to move on.
“I think we need to take a deep breath. Look, I believe in traditional marriage but the Supreme Court has ruled on it,” Kasich said, on national television, “and I will abide by it.”
Kasich, 63, will announce his run for the White House a week after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is due to jump in the race, July 13.
