Fourth of July celebrations this year are going to have an added layer of surveillance from the FBI.
The FBI has issued a warning for Americans to be on high alert this holiday weekend, warning the Fourth of July provides would-be terrorists an opportunity to strike with maximum symbolic potential.
The federal agency also said it has not received any specific or credible threat for this weekend, Fox News reported.
At the same time, the FBI is setting up command centers at spots around the country, as a way to monitor – and if needed – respond to any incident.
The command centers will serve as data collection and dissemination points. Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are being asked to contact these centers with any type of information that could reveal suspicious behaviors, Fox News said.
Civil liberty advocates are somewhat alarmed. Fox News also reported a law enforcement source said the FBI’s strategy on counter-terrorism has evolved to the point where agents are being told to get ISIS supporters off the streets as soon as possible – meaning, some individuals could be detained for activities that aren’t necessarily tied to terror.
