Hackers working for the likes of Islamic terror groups and the Chinese government have set their sights on America’s media outlets, breaking into several U.S. news organizations’ websites recently.
The latest: The Washington Post’s website redirected clickers to a page under the control of the pro-President Bashar Assad group, the Syrian Electronic Army. And among the messages readers were then subjected was, “US govt is training the terrorists to kill more Syrians” and “The media is always lying,” the Hill reported.
Intelligence officials say the Washington Post is only one of dozens of U.S. media outlets that have come under attack in recent years. The New York Times, Bloomberg News and the Wall Street Journal were all hit by hackers from China in 2013.
The Chicago Tribune, Forbes and CNBC were targeted by a Syrian group just a few months ago. And Newsweek was just hit by the Cyber Caliphate, an online movement that’s tied to ISIS.
At least one official expressed concern with the Washington Post hack.
“If a rag-tag band of hacktivists can commandeer a site that’s visited by millions of people, it stands to reason it could also be pierced by criminally motivated hackers who would keep a much lower profile,” said Ars Technica Security editor Dan Goodin, the Hill reported.
