Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican Party pick for president, sidestepped his campaign attacks on Hillary Clinton for a bit to turn attention to a woman who’s been talked about as the Democrat’s vice presidential candidate, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, calling her a “racist” and a ‘total fraud” and worse.
Trump’s comments came in context of reacting to Warren’s public condemnation of him as a bigot.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump said: “She said she’s five percent Native American. She was unable to prove it. She used the fact that she was Native American to advance her career. Elizabeth Warren is a total fraud. I know it. Other people who work with her know it. Elizabeth Warren is a total fraud.”
Trump also said he hoped Warren would be chosen by Clinton as a running mate.
“I will speak very openly about her if she is,” he said, the Hill reported. “She is one of the least productive senators in the United States Senate. We call her Pocahontas for a reason. … I would love to compete with her.”
And he wrapped by saying, “she made up her heritage, which I think is racist. I think she’s a racist, actually, because what she did was very racist.”
Scott Brown, former senator of Massachusetts who lost his reelection bid to Warren, said in a separate interview with the Washington Examiner that Warren could prove her Native American background if she truly wanted – by taking a DNA test.
“First of all, as we all know, she’s not Native American,” Brown said. “She’s not 1/32nd [like she claimed]. She has no Native American background except for what her family told her. The easy answer, as you all know, is that Harvard and [the University of Pennsylvania] can release the records. She can authorize the release of those records. She can take a DNA test. She can release the records herself.”
Warren in 2012 was outed by political competitors as having referred to herself as a minority while serving as professor at Harvard.
The reminder from Trump of her past came just hours after Warren called the billionaire businessman, at a campaign stop in Cincinnati, a “small, insecure money-grubber,” and a “thin-skinned bully driven by greed and hate.”
