Nigel Farage, the British politician who heads up the UK Independence Party, says he believes a Donald Trump administration would be better for British interests than President Obama’s White House.
Farage, making the international media rounds on the heels of his Brexit victory, made the remarks during an interview with CNN.
“I think for the United Kingdom, Trump will be better for us than Barack Obama’s been, of that there’s no doubt,” Farage said.
The UKIP leader skewered Obama late last week, saying that the president’s repeated threats to British voters about the possibility of trade interruptions likely helped the Brexit cause.
Trump, meanwhile, has vowed that he’ll support the Britain in any way possible following its EU exit if he’s elected president.
In addition to the promise of support, Farage said he likes Trump’s willingness to tackle uncomfortable subjects.
“Donald Trump dares to talk about things that other people want to brush under the carpet,” he said.
The UKIP leader is no stranger to tackling controversy head-on himself— but, he contends, Britain’s problems as an EU member state were far greater than what American politicians will be forced to address in the years ahead.
“My problem, in politics, is far greater than Donald Trump’s,” Farage said.
He added: “We literally have lost our sovereignty, lost our borders, lost our ability to regulate. The problem you’ve got in the U.S. is illegal immigration. Our problem is legal immigration to half a billion people.”
As for Hillary Clinton, Farage contends that her deep establishment ties should be too much for any voter to stomach.
“There’s nothing on earth that could persuade me to ever vote for Hillary Clinton. I mean, she represents the political elite. It’s almost as if she feels she has sort of a divine right to have that job.”
