This is the “most unlikely election in our lifetimes,” according to Better for America Chairman John Kingston. That’s why his group believes the electorate is ready for an independent option for the presidency.
Kingston, a bundler for Mitt Romney’s failed presidential bid, said he “absolutely” expects an independent presidential candidate to emerge based on conversations he’s had with several high-profile politicians and officials.
By the end of next week, Kingston said his group will have secured ballot access in New Mexico, New Jersey, Delaware, Iowa and Alaska. In addition, he said Bettor for America has legal staffers dedicated to accomplishing ballot access in states like Texas, South Dakota and North Carolina where deadlines have already passed.
With the push for ballot access underway, Kingston said an independent challenger should emerge within the coming weeks.
“By the end of July it’s still plausible,” Kingston told The Hill. “You can be disruptive beyond that and still get on some ballots through August and September, but to get to a place where you can win outright would be a challenge beyond August 1.”
As for whether an independent could actually win, Kingston cites voter dissatisfaction with the current options as a positive for his cause.
“There is a deep reservoir of American dissatisfaction over the process on both sides that produced these flawed candidates,” he said. “We’re seeking to galvanize both sides.”
