Johnson and Weld to voters: Unlike ‘CLINTTRUMP,’ we’ve been there

Libertarian presidential hopeful Gary Johnson and his running mate Bill Weld are working to remind voters that neither Democrat Hillary Clinton nor Republican Donald Trump have the experience they gained as successful two-term governors.

“As the governor of New Mexico, I vetoed wasteful spending 750 times, cut taxes 14 times and left the state with new highways, bridges, schools, hospitals and left the state with a billion dollar surplus,” Johnson said in a new no-frills campaign ad.

“As governor of Massachusetts, I cut taxes 21 times and took unemployment from the highest rate among the 11 industrialized states, to the lowest,” Weld added.

The two former governors also noted that they were both re-elected by landslides, even as Republicans in heavily Democratic states.

In addition to experience governing a state, Johnson is a successful entrepreneur whose American success story building a construction company is a little more “Average Joe” than the story of Trump’s business success.

Prior to becoming Massachusetts governor, Weld served as U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts during the Reagan administration and was later promoted to head the Criminal Division of the Justice Department in Washington. Weld ended his governorship when President Bill Clinton appointed him as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

The two are making the case that their combined business and leadership experience far trump what’s currently being offered on the Democratic and Republican tickets.

“The difference between the two of us and the other candidates running for president is that we’ve been there,” Johnson said.

“And done that,” Weld added.

Calling their ticket a “credible alternative to “CLINTRUMP,” Johnson and Weld said they believe they can appeal to voters from both parties.

“Give us one term America, and if after four years you decide you don’t like peace, prosperity and freedom, you can always vote a Trump or a Hillary back into office again,” Johnson said.

Johnson is currently polling at about 10 percent nationwide, leaving open the possibility that he can meet the 15 percent threshold to join the debate stage with Clinton and Trump this fall.
