Let the bickering begin: Just hours after a widely anticipated report on Benghazi was released, and already Democrats were launching their counter-attack – and Republicans were rushing to dig in and defend.
Case in point: The five Democrats on the House Select Committee on Benghazi, along with ranking member Rep. Elijah Cummings, put out a stern statement against Rep. Trey Gowdy, who chairs the panel, saying the former prosecutor mishandled the entire investigation.
“In our opinion, Chairman Gowdy has been conducting this investigation like an overzealous prosecutor desperately trying to land a front-page conviction rather than a neutral judge of facts seeking to improve the security of our diplomatic corps,” the Democrats wrote in a letter reported by the Hill.
And it didn’t take long for Gowdy to respond.
On the nationally broadcast “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, Gowdy said, in reference to Cummings’ Maryland roots, the same state where Marilyn Mosby is under fire for overly aggressive prosecution against the police officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death: “If anyone would recognize an overzealous prosecutor, it would be someone from Baltimore.”
Gowdy then pointed out: “Secondarily, he hasn’t read the report. You read the report and if you think it’s an overzealous prosecutor … we mention [former State] Secretary Clinton’s name less times than the Democrats do, despite the fact our report is twice as long. Read it for yourself and read all of the new information that we found and what the focus is on. It is not on one person, it is on four people.”
Republicans released their 800-page findings on Benghazi on Tuesday, as WND previously reported.
