(LONG BEACH PRESS-TELEGRAM) — An ad-hoc committee will help update Long Beach Unified School District’s more than 20-year-old process of selecting or changing school names and recommend to the board by early November whether to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary.
The board, which has final say on school names, announced Monday night the formation of the new committee after more than a dozen public speakers voiced support for changing the name of a school named for a Confederate Army general.
“Lee was a good general, but his time is done,” said David Boyle, a Long Beach resident who suggested “To Kill A Mockingbird” author Harper Lee as a possible replacement name.
“She’s an icon of racial equality,” he said.
