Rick Perry: Trump’s candidacy is ‘cancer on conservatism’

The ongoing war of words between GOP presidential candidates Rick Perry and Donald Trump just got quite a bit uglier Wednesday – with the former Texas governor blasting Trump’s candidacy as “a cancer on conservatism” that “must be clearly diagnosed, excised and discarded.”

Perry’s criticism of Trump was delivered in Washington, D.C., to the Opportunity and Freedom PAC, the super PAC supporting Perry.

Perry began by stating, “The next president will face serious issues that demand serious leadership.”

After detailing the failed policies of the Obama administration, Perry directed his criticism at the real-estate mogul’s campaign:

The White House has been occupied by giants. But from time to time it is sought by the small-minded – divisive figures propelled by anger, and appealing to the worst instincts in the human condition.

In times of trouble, there are two types of leaders: repairers of the breach and sowers of discord.

The sower of discord foments agitation, thrives on division, scapegoats certain elements of society, and offers empty platitudes and promises. He is without substance when one scratches below the surface.

He offers a barking carnival act that can be best described as Trumpism: a toxic mix of demagoguery, mean-spiritedness and nonsense that will lead the Republican Party to perdition if pursued.

Let no one be mistaken – Donald Trump’s candidacy is a cancer on conservatism, and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised and discarded.

It cannot be pacified or ignored, for it will destroy a set of principles that has lifted more people out of poverty than any force in the history of the civilized world – the cause of conservatism.

Perry’s fiery criticism comes on the heels of heated exchanged between Trump and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Trump read out Graham’s personal cell phone number during a campaign stop Tuesday, which prompted Graham to release a video of himself destroying his cell phone.

It followed by only hours Graham describing Trump as “the world’s biggest jackass” for questioning the “war hero” status of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

Trump was called out by members of his own party after he said July 18 that U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was not a war hero simply because he got captured in Vietnam. In the next breath, Trump quickly corrected himself and said McCain was a war hero, but not simply because he got captured.

Perry took issue with the statements at the D.C. events, stating, “Trump couldn’t stand for five minutes what john McCain endured for five-and-a-half years.”

He added, “That was one of the most offensive things I’ve heard a public official say in my 30-plus years of politics.”

Last week, Perry said Trump’s comments about McCain should disqualify the billionaire from the presidency.

Trump took a jab at Perry, saying the governor, “Put glasses on so people will think he’s smart.”

On July 16, Trump accused Perry of failing to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trump tweeted: “@GovernorPerry failed on the border. He should be forced to take an IQ test before being allowed to enter the GOP debate.”

Trump has said, as president, he would build a “great, great wall on our southern border.”

On Wednesday, the Rick Perry campaign posted the following video of Trump praising Perry as a “terrific guy” with a “very good record”:
