NASCAR speedways are asking fans to please leave the Confederate flags at home.
Dozens of NASCAR speedways have sent out a collective plea to fans to leave their Confederate flags at home and help the racing program steer clear of any perceived discrimination that dents its public relations image and policy of inclusiveness.
“We are asking our fans and partners to join us in a renewed effort to create an all-inclusive, even more welcoming atmosphere for all who attend our events,” a coaltion of U.S. racecourses said, the Associated Press reported.
“This will include the request to refrain from displaying the Confederate flag at our facilities and NASCAR events,” the statement went on.
The plea came from the International Speedway Corp. and Speedway Motorsports Inc, the organizations that own nearly all of the Sprint Cup Series tracks. Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway in Ohio also signed the statement, as well as dozens of other speedways, Forbes reported.
Daytona International Speedway in Florida is hosting a voluntary exchange program that will let fans trade their Confederate banners for American flags.
“We want to be inclusive to everyone, and the last thing you want is for anyone to come to a sporting event and really not enjoy that experience because of symbols that really represent things we’re not proud of,” track President Joie Chitwood said, the Hill reported. “Going forward, we’ll really have to look at where that other flag goes, because it doesn’t have a place in our sport and we’ve got to take a thoughtful on how we get to that place.”
NASCAR’s plea to fans is just the latest in a line of businesses that have taken dramatic measures to oust the Confederate flag. Amazon, for instance, announced a few days ago it would no longer sell the banner on its website, as WND previously reported.
