When Donald Trump announced he would seek the Republican nomination for president, everyone knew he wouldn’t worry about being politically correct — far from it. So we shouldn’t be surprised by the hailstorm of controversy that erupted over his remarks about illegal immigrants.
In his announcement on June 16, The Donald had this to say about the flood of illegals pouring over our border from Mexico: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. … They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
How dare he! The backlash was almost instantaneous. NBCUniversal announced that it is cutting all ties with the media celebrity and real estate mogul. In its pompous proclamation, the network declared, “At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values. Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump.”
Big deal. Trump had already announced that he would no longer host “The Apprentice,” his hugely popular show on NBC television. Nevertheless, pundits couldn’t resist the running the headline “NBC to Trump: You’re Fired!”
Then Univision, the popular Spanish-language TV network, said that it would no longer broadcast the Miss USA and Miss Universe contests, which Trump co-owns. Trump responded by filing a lawsuit against the network, demanding $500 million in damages. He also banned any employees from Univision from playing golf at the Doral Country Club in Miami, which he owns. That will teach them.
In an appearance on “The O’Reilly Factor” on Fox News, host Bill O’Reilly asked Trump if he regretted his statement. Not a bit, Trump replied. “It’s totally accurate. The border is a disaster, Bill. People are pouring in.”
Trump has promised that if he is elected, he will end illegal immigration from Mexico. In his June 16 speech announcing his candidacy, Trump said: “I would build a Great Wall — and nobody builds walls better and I will do it very inexpensively — on our southern border and have Mexico pay for it.”
Syndicated columnist Ann Coulter, whose latest book, “Adios, America,” is about the devastating consequences of illegal immigration, said the government is not telling the truth about criminal activity by illegal immigrants. In a statement to Breitbart News, she wrote:
Why don’t we know exactly how many drug dealers in our prisons are foreigners? Why is our [government] refusing to tell us how many immigrants have been convicted of rape or murder in the U.S.? The [government] won’t tell us and the media cover up immigrant crime, while broadcasting every immigrant who wins a spelling bee. The facts that exist suggest that the immigrant crime wave is enormous.
Coulter cited a report by The Washington Post, which said that Mexico and Columbia “account for more than 90 percent of the U.S. heroin supply, and nearly all of it is smuggled into this country by Mexican traffickers.”
There can be no doubt that while Trump’s comments about illegal immigration may not be politically correct, they are sadly accurate. But because they fly in the face of media bias (not to mention Obama administration policy), you can expect the facts to be ignored and suppressed.
The mainstream media will continue to portray Trump as a loud-mouthed buffoon. But I suspect more and more voters will see past his act and judge him on his policies and promises. In fact, that’s already happening, which is why he’s climbing in the polls.
Go get ’em, Donald! I can’t wait to hear what your next politically incorrect bombshell will be.
Until next time, keep some powder dry.
