Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas this week joined fellow GOP presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky in efforts to defund Planned Parenthood following the release of a second undercover video in which a representative from the organization negotiates the cash sale of aborted baby body tissues.
On Tuesday, Cruz’s office announced that the senator planned to force action on the issue by filing an amendment to the highway bill which would eliminate all federal funding to Planned Parenthood. Cruz also said he will add an amendment to fully repeal Obamcare.
Cruz also sent letters to Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Cate Dyer, CEO of StemExpress, questioning the legality of Planned Parenthood’s actions.
The lawmaker told reporters, “The recent revelation by Planned Parenthood that it encourages its affiliates to perform abortions in certain ways in order to maximize profit is not only abhorrent, it may also violate federal law.
“Given NIH’s role in dispensing taxpayer dollars for fetal tissue-based research and StemExpress’s procurement of fetal tissue for profit, it is imperative that both followed federal law at every turn.”
Controversy surrounding Planned Parenthood selling abortion tissues began last week after Breitbart released the initial video of an official with the organization “between bites of lunch and sips of wine” selling fetus hearts, livers, extremities and other tissues.
“Recent video revelations, involving potentially criminal activity, make it more obvious than ever that this organization has absolutely zero respect for the sanctity of human life and is an affront to the most basic human dignity enshrined in our founding documents,” Paul said of that footage, vowing to “use all legislative vehicles at his disposal” to defund the organization.
