Conservative investigative news outlet Project Veritas on Wednesday released video of Hillary Clinton campaign staffers “skirting” Iowa election laws by actively attempting to avoid registering voters who might not vote for their candidate.
In the footage, which was secretly filmed by a Veritas reporter posing as a Hillary for America volunteer, a paid Clinton staffer is seen explaining that “we don’t want to make our focus — voter registration.”
“If you open up a conversation as like, ‘Hey, are you registered to vote?’ And they’re, like, ‘no,’ and they want to register, you have to register them,” the official said.
The Clinton staffer said it is better for the campaign to ask first if an individual is a supporter.
“And so that’s why I want to keep our primary focus on, ‘Hey, are you a Hillary supporter?’ And then if not, then great move on, you know?” she said.
The video goes on to show how Clinton campaign workers use the tactic as they engage potential voters.
“Do you guys plan on supporting [Clinton] this coming year?” a volunteer asked women on the street as the undercover camera rolled.
“I’m sorry, I’m a fan of Bernie Sanders,” one responded.
“Another Bernie Sanders curse,” the Clinton volunteer said, handing campaign fliers, but not voter registration forms, to the two before walking away.
According to Time, the practice is actually not illegal and is widely used by the GOP as well — even if it does have an anti-democracy flair.
“This approach to training volunteers is standard operating procedure across field campaigns, according to a Republican field staffer, who requested anonymity,” Time reported.
But it may not matter whether this video is particularly damning to Hillary 2016, because Veritas founder James O’Keefe has claimed that it shows only one of many of the campaign’s misdeeds.
“Stay tuned, Hillary, because we’re shortly going to release a stunning story of electoral malfeasance at the highest levels of your campaign,” O’Keefe says. “Check your email.”
