‘Draft Biden’ campaign picks up steam

The push for vice president Joe Biden to enter the presidential race is picking up steam, with an aide to the now-deceased Beau Biden joining a political committee to raise money for the effort – but at least one former Clinton family follower, David Axelrod, is advising: Don’t do it.

“I would not [advise him to run] because I know what it takes to put a presidential campaign together and it is late in the game,” Axelrod said during a “TODAY” interview. “Secretary Clinton, for all her problems, some of them self-inflicted, still has a very high rating among Democrats and that of course is what determines who the nominee will be, and a big head start.”

Josh Earnest, White House spokesman, weighed in Monday, too, on a possible Biden run, saying he’s been “an excellent vice president” and brings many honed diplomatic and political skills to the table.

“He said he’s thinking about it,” Earnest said, on Fox News, of Biden’s potential run for the high office. “Joe Biden certainly has earned the right to make that decision.”

Earnest refused to say where President Obama stood on the matter of Biden versus Clinton, saying only “the president ultimately wants Democratic voters to decide.”

That Biden’s thinking of making the move, though, could throw a substantial kink in Clinton’s ratings with the voters – which has already been dented in recent weeks due to perceptions about her lack of trustworthiness.

Reportedly, Beau spent his dying moments pressing his father to challenge Clinton for the White House. And just recently, Josh Alcorn, a close adviser to the late Beau, partnered with a group, Draft Biden, to press the issue to the next level.

“I’m thrilled that Josh is joining Draft Biden,” said Will Pierce, the executive director of the Super PAC, on CNN. “Biden supporters across the country know how close he was to Beau and his family. Josh joining the Draft Biden effort only increases the seriousness nature of what to date has been an enormously successful effort.”
