(ASSOCIATED PRESS) — The Democratic National Committee offered a “sincere apology” to Bernie Sanders and his supporters on Monday for what they called “inexcusable remarks” made in emails that were recently leaked.
The statement from the DNC said the comments did not reflect the party’s values or commitment to neutrality in the primary process.
The apology, which roughly coincided with the opening of the party’s convention in Philadelphia, came just a few hours after Sanders urged supporters to line up behind presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. More than 5,000 delegates are among the 50,000 people set to attend the four-day convention.
Not long after the convention opened on Monday, some in the stadium loudly booed as Marcia Fudge, a Democrat from Cleveland, spoke.
