An organization that exposes Islamic extremism reports a delegate to the Democratic National Convention this week is a member of a criminal Muslim group that has established enclaves across the United States.

The non-profit Clarion Project said Thursday a delegate for Bernie Sanders is a member of Muslims of the Americas, a rebranding of the cultish Islamist group Jamaat ul-Fuqra, led by an extremist cleric in Pakistan.

Gregory “Shoaib” Jones of Wasilla, Alaska, also is running for the Alaska State House.

The report cites an internal newspaper report from Fuqra’s publication, the Islamist Post.

“While this development was featured in their internal newspaper, it was never featured on their website or social media pages, probably because being linked to Fuqra isn’t exactly something that helps one win an election,” the report said.

Ryan Mauro, a Clarion Project national security analyst, noted the Facebook page for Jones’ campaign explains he is a supporter of Sanders.

“This is Gregory ‘Shoaib’ Jones, and I am honored to announce that I am running for the Alaska House of Representatives seat in District 8,” he writes. “I am passionate about building a brighter future for the communities of Knik-Fairview, Big Lake, Meadow Lakes, and Point Mackenzie. I will work hard to strengthen Alaska’s economy and improve the lives of my constituents. As your representative, I will listen to your concerns and make sure your voices are heard in Juneau.”

He explains he was an electrician for 16 years and recently has been working as security professional with ADT Fire & Security.

“I understand the challenges facing Alaska’s working families, and I am dedicated to tackling them in the legislature for the benefit of all Alaskans. I know Alaskans are tired of politics as usual and want their legislators to get things done. It is time for a fresh start. With your vote, I will bring a new perspective, fresh ideas, and a can-do attitude focused on results, not just politics.”

Founded in 2006, Clarion Project is an independently funded, non-profit organization “dedicated to exposing the dangers of Islamist extremism while providing a platform for the voices of moderation and promoting grassroots activism.”

Its award-winning movies on issues including religious persecution, human rights, women’s rights and jihad have been seen by more than 50 million.

Its report explains that Jamaat ul-Fuqra is not a social club.

“Jamaat ul-Fuqra currently goes by the name of Muslims of the Americas and denies Fuqra’s existence. It changed its name after being involved in a series of terrorist attacks and plots in the 1980s and early 1990s. The State Department included Fuqra in its annual terrorism reports until 2000, describing Fuqra as an ‘Islamic sect that seeks to purify Islam through violence.’”

Clarion’s report said: “It is best known for its ‘Islamberg’ headquarters in New York where guerrilla training of women has occurred. … It claims to have 22 ‘Islamic villages’ in 12 states. The Clarion Project identified one such ‘village’ in Texas in 2014. We recently published the heartbreaking testimony of a woman who grew up in these villages in the 1980s.”

Nearly 10 years ago, the FBI said “the documented propensity for violence by this organization supports the belief the leadership of the MOA extols membership to pursue a policy of jihad or holy war against individuals or groups it considers enemies of Islam, which includes the U.S. government.”

The report identified Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani as the “cult leader” who runs Jamaat al-Fuqra and MOA.

The federal advisory also notes Muslims of the Americas “possess an infrastructure capable of planning and mounting terrorist campaigns overseas and within the U.S.”

About Jones, Mauro’s report explains: “The Fuqra newspaper article says he was born in Washington, D.C., and spent most of his life in South Carolina. In 2009, he moved to Alaska with his wife, Maleika, and other family members. He also says he lived in North Carolina. … A 2009 article from Fuqra’s newspaper announces the arrival of Jones and his wife in Alaska ‘to establish an independent, self-sufficient, purely Islamic village.’ It says this was ‘initiated’ by their Pakistan-based leader, Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani.”

The Islamic Post notes that upon arriving in Alaska, he immediately went to a Bible study “as part of their interfaith studies and efforts to build bridges between adherents of the two faiths, Islam and Christianity.”

“Jones isn’t the only Fuqra/MOA member with political aspirations. Last month, the Clarion Project broke the story that Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, who simultaneously holds position in Fuqra and the Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), had declared her intention to run for governor,” Mauro wrote.

“Fuqra responded to the article by condemning the author as a ‘discredited Islamophobe’ who ‘attacks [a] Muslim woman attorney,’” he wrote. “U.S. government agencies have referred to Fuqra as a terrorist and criminal group for decades now.”
