Is Sicilian mafia linked to weaponry used by ISIS?

A startling new suggestion has been raised about the terror being created by ISIS across the Middle East, North Africa and even Europe.

The Islamist terror army may be getting some of its weapons from the Sicilian mafia, according to a report in Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

Writer Mark Townsend explains in the Guardian that the details aren’t completely clear, but investigators are looking into a gun-running operation belonging to the crime ring and prosecutors are reviewing evidence of the “possibility that Cosa Nostra is supplying assault weapons to organized-crime syndicates from North Africa” and extremists.

Joseph Fitsanakis, who writes about espionage and more at IntelNews, explained the basic suspicions.

“The initial link to the supply of weapons seems to originate with an organized criminal family in Catania, on Sicily’s eastern coast. The family, known locally as the ‘Ceusi,’ is part of the “Santopaula’ clan, which is the dominant criminal network in that part of Italy.

“Investigators have confirmed that two years ago the Ceusi family purchased a cache of 160 deactivated AK-47s from AFG Security Corporation, a Slovakia-based European weapons dealer.”

The report said the $40,000 purchase was legal, but what wasn’t was the reactivation of the guns by removing metal pins that had been inserted into the barrels.

Townsend pointed out that AFG allegedly supplied the weapons used by Islamists in the Charlie Hebdo and Paris attacks last winter.

The crime network then reportedly planned to move the weapons into Alexandria, Egypt, and a police source said one Egyptian suspect previously had an arrest for belonging to a human trafficking organization.

And, the police source said, “We’ve been investigating possible connections with terrorist organizations.”

Both ISIS and al-Qaida have been known to be in the Sinai Peninsula.
