Dallas Area Rapid Transit police released on Friday morning the name of one of the officers killed by snipers during a deadly shooting in the city that left five dead and six injured – Brent Thompson, a 43-year-old man who served on the force for seven years.

“Brent was a great officer,” said DART police chief James Spiller, to MSNBC. “He has served admirably during his time here at DART.”

Thompson died during the hail of gunfire unleashed by several snipers who attacked police during a protest march in downtown Dallas, NBC News reported. The protest was about two separate fatal shootings of two black men by police in Baton Rouge and Minneapolis, earlier this week, as reported by WND.

Spiller said Thompson worked with DART for seven years, and his death is especially poignant because he’s the first officer to die during the course of duty in the agency’s 27-year history.

“It’s a horrendous loss for all of us,” Spiller said. “It’s something you know we’re going to get through it … we’ve gotten a lot of well wishes throughout the country … we’re grateful to be receiving all of those.”

DART also released the names of three of its other officers injured in the attack, and now recuperating: Misty McBride, 32; Omar Cannon, 44; and Jesus Retana, 39.

“As you can imagine, our hearts are broken,” a statement on the DART website read. “This is something that touches every part of our organization. We have received countless expressions of support and sympathy from around the world through the evening. We are grateful for every message. Thank you.”

Four other police officers were killed in the attack, but their names have not yet been released. Three suspects were taken into custody and a fourth, confirmed dead after a long stand-off with police in a garage in Dallas. Various media reported that suspect had reported shot and killed himself, after exchanging in gunfire with police.
