Concealed carry requires extra care during police encounters

Details of the police shooting in Falcon Heights, Minnesota, Wednesday are still murky. But even without knowing more, the shocking video of a man dying after being shot by an officer— allegedly because he stated there was a weapon in the vehicle for which he had a permit— is a reminder of the extra precautions CCW holders must take when dealing with police.

Traffic stops can often be stressful for both civilians and police officers— and when officers learn people they’ve pulled over are armed, things can quickly escalate to tragedy.

This post isn’t intended to discuss whether traffic stops are part of a government extortion racket or how having to have a concealed carry permit is a violation of the 2nd Amendment in the first place. Though, I’m sure those topics will arise in the comment section.

Because traffic stops are a reality of American life and many of us are concealed carriers, this is simply an opportunity to offer some practical advice on police interactions while armed.

Here’s a helpful video from the National Shooting Sports Foundation featuring SIG SAUER Academy Director and police officer Adam Painchaud:

Some things to keep in mind when pulled over while armed:

  • Turn on your interior light and keep your hands on the wheel as the officer approaches your vehicle.
  • Advise the officer that you are a CCW holder from the beginning. Concealed Nation recommends something like, “Officer, I want to let you know that I have a concealed carry permit in this state and am currently have one on my person. How would you like me to proceed?”
  • Advise the officer of the location of your firearm before retrieving any document.
  • Move slowly and act calmly.
  • It never hurts to be courteous, even if you are irritated at having been pulled over.

If you know and are in compliance with your state and local firearm laws, there should be no problem. In fact, more officers are 2nd Amendment supporters than not. There are a few bad apples out there, sure— but most are just men and women who want to make sure they make it home to their families after a long day.
