With the Republican establishment continuing to look for ways to deny Donald Trump the party’s nomination, the presidential hopeful is warning that Republicans may see riots at the convention if he isn’t picked.
“I think you’d have riots,” Trump said when asked recently about what might happen if he goes to Cleveland with the most primary votes but doesn’t get nominated by convention delegates.
According to Trump, many of his new-to-politics supporters might not understand.
“I’m representing a tremendous — many, many millions of people — in many cases, first-time voters. These are people that haven’t voted because they never believed in the system,” he said.
Trump added: “Now, if you disenfranchise those people and you say, ‘Well, I’m sorry, but you’re 100 votes short, even though the next one is 500 votes short,’ I think you would have problems like you’ve never seen before. I think bad things would happen, I really do. I believe that. I wouldn’t lead it but I think bad things would happen.”
Republican National Committee spokesperson Sean Spicer later said the GOP assumes Trump is “speaking figuratively” when he suggests that riots could become a reality.
But not everyone is so sure.
As Real Clear Politics put it: “It’s painfully clear that he means real, actual violence, and it’s painfully clear that RNC spokesman Sean Spicer has no choice when asked about it but to try disingenuously to cover that up.”
Spicer would need to cover it up because Trump, like him or not, has revealed a rift between the GOP elite and the party’s average voter that the establishment has long tried to keep under cover.
