Carson defends Trump on abortion remark

Former presidential candidate and ex-neurosurgeon Ben Carson defended Donald Trump on his abortion comment, saying the Republican front-runner didn’t have time to think through the matter before he was asked.

“Well bear in mind, I don’t believe that he was warned that that question was coming, and I don’t think he really had a chance to really think about it,” Carson said, in an interview with CNN.

The ‘Stop Hillary’ campaign is on fire! Join the surging response to this theme: ‘Clinton for prosecution, not president’

Carson, weeks ago, dropped his own bid for the White House and came out in support of Trump.

Trump created a firestorm during an interview on MSNBC when he said, under a hail of questions from host Chris Matthews, that “there has to be some form of punishment, yeah,” for women who violate any sort of theoretical ban on abortion.

Trump clarified with this statement, released a few hours later, the Hill reported: “If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman. The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed. Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.”

Carson, meanwhile, said it’s really not uncommon for a political candidate to speak on issues before nailing down the proper talking points – and that Trump was hardly a practiced politician.

“That happens very frequently,” he said, the Hill reported, “and you know, what you develop with experience is how to answer that in a way that is not definitive. You know how politicians are. He hasn’t really learned that because he’s not a politician.”

And on Trump’s clarification, Carson said this: “He has now had time to come back and thnk about it, and to talk with his people about it, and come up with a more rational and informed type of answer.”
