Authors say capitalism, communism are … different!

President Obama only last week urged young Argentinians to forget about the “interesting intellectual arguments” among capitalists, communists and socialists and “just choose from what works.”

And if Argentinians actually follow the U.S. president’s advice, they will find that capitalism is what works best, according to William Murray, author of the stunning new “Utopian Road to Hell: Enslaving America and the World with Central Planning,” which addresses communism.

“They are not ‘intellectual arguments’ and should not be classified as merely intellectual,” said Murray, the chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition. “As for his advice to pick what works, they should – and that is not communism.”

He explained, “It has been proven over and over and over again that all of the utopian dreams, regardless of whether they’re ‘far left’ or ‘far right,’ don’t work, that the free marketplace is the only thing that supplies the necessary goods and services to the people.”

Speaking to a group of students in Argentina last Thursday, Obama flashed some of the “pragmatism” many have attributed to him over the years.

“So often in the past there has been a sharp division between left and right, between capitalists and communists or socialists, and especially in the Americas, that’s been a big debate,” Obama said.

“Those are interesting intellectual arguments, but I think for your generation, you should be practical and just choose from what works. You don’t have to worry about whether it neatly fits into socialist theory or capitalist theory – you should just decide what works.”

International journalist and educator Alex Newman scoffed at Obama’s indifference to the critical components in capitalism and communism that do, in fact, make them far different.

“To reasonable Americans, Obama’s kooky comments in Argentina downplaying the differences between liberty and socialist/communist tyranny likely sounded like a joke from a man completely detached from reality with not a shred of understanding when it comes to history, economics, or common sense,” said Newman, co-author of “Crimes of the Educators.”

“Unfortunately, his outlandish views on this subject are par for the course when it comes to government education in America, which unashamedly aims to indoctrinate all children into socialist and humanist values.”

Obama relayed to the Argentine students what he had told Cuban President Raul Castro just days prior.

“I said, look, you’ve made great progress in educating young people,” he said. “Every child in Cuba gets a basic education – that’s a huge improvement from where it was. Medical care – the life expectancy of Cubans is equivalent to the United States, despite it being a very poor country, because they have access to health care. That’s a huge achievement. They should be congratulated.”

But this analysis ignores the fact that many Cubans are going hungry, according to Murray. Also, the author is skeptical of whether the Cuban health care system is all that Obama cracks it up to be.

“There was an emphasis made on educating doctors in Cuba, and they do have a surplus of doctors in Cuba,” Murray revealed. “In fact, Cuba has a net export of doctors because government made that a priority. That does not make medicine in Cuba better because of the number of doctors. In fact, advanced medical techniques are not available in Cuba because it is controlled by the government and they had this strange idea that the number of doctors was what provided good medicine rather than new and effective and inventive techniques.”

In other words, Murray believes Cuba’s socialist government is stifling innovation and holding back the country’s medical system. He asserted the Castro brothers’ attempt to create a utopia in Cuba failed.

Obama told the Argentine students the most successful economies are market-based, but he added, “A market does not work by itself. It has to have a social and moral and ethical and community basis, and there has to be inclusion. Otherwise it’s not stable.”

Yes, businesses should be ethical, Murray agreed. But if the president believes government needs to engineer “inclusion” for everyone in the economy, Murray thinks he’s going too far.

“Social components are necessary, but they don’t need to be imposed on all,” Murray told WND. “Certain social components are required in order to assist individuals who cannot help themselves. Certain government components are necessary to incarcerate people who commit violent crimes against the society. But to have the government initiate social programs over free people is absolutely wrong.”

Murray warned excessive government tinkering with the “social” aspects of an economy have the side effect of damaging economic liberty.

“It is clear from history that if you do not have economic freedom, if an individual does not have economic freedom then they don’t have the other freedoms that go along with it – freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of the press are just not possible without economic freedom,” Murray said. “If you do not have the economic means to have free speech or to have free press or to have free assembly, then you cannot have those freedoms.”

Newman believes Obama’s “interesting intellectual argument” over capitalism and communism is actually an all-important tension that holds major implications for American children as well as Argentine children.

“We must ensure that our children understand history,” Newman cautioned. “Communism kills. Liberty produces greatness. And it is our birthright, obtained through the sacrifices of generations of Americans. This is not about an ‘interesting intellectual argument,’ it’s about ensuring the survival of liberty on a planet that is increasingly run by dangerous demagogues like Castro and Obama.”
