Trump: Cruz started ‘garbage’ but let’s move on

Asked by talk-radio host Michael Savage if it’s at all possible that someone from his campaign staff was responsible for the National Enquirer story claiming Ted Cruz had five mistresses, GOP presidential primary front-runner Donald Trump insisted his camp is clean.

“No, it’s not possible,” Trump said. “In fact, two articles were written today, or yesterday, by not-lovers of Trump, the Daily Beast – whatever that may be – and another one, a respected journalist, that said Marco Rubio has been peddling this story for a long time.”

Trump, a regular guest on “The Savage Nation,” was invited to come on the show after Savage warned Friday that he might withdraw his support of the real-estate billionaire’s White House bid if he did not denounce the National Enquirer story.

“I never heard about this story, and frankly I had absolutely nothing to do with the National Enquirer putting the story in,” Trump told Savage Monday.

“Who knows if he did it?” Trump said, referring to Rubio. “I have no idea if he did. I only know it wasn’t me.

“And Cruz ought to focus on other things, because it’s disgusting, frankly, when he blames me,” Trump said.

When Savage later pressed Trump to affirm the campaigns should move on from the personal insults that culminated last week with the National Enquirer story, calling it all “garbage,” Trump agreed.

“He started it. But I think it’s now total garbage. Absolutely. It’s ridiculous,” Trump said.

Trump referred back to a previous remark Savage made about “having been smeared like I’ve never seen anyone smeared before.”

“You’re right, somebody in your world called me and said they have never seen anybody slandered like I’ve been slandered over the last week, about the whole woman thing,” Trump said.

“Nobody respects women more than I do, Michael. You know that.”

Savage said Friday he was disgusted that the two leading GOP candidates are spending their time sniping at each other rather than Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

Savage told his listeners Friday that Trump’s ties to National Enquirer CEO David Pecker raise red flags as to who started rumors claiming Cruz cheated on his wife, Heidi, with five women. Savage condemned the story saying he knows what it is like to be smeared.

“He should get rid of this connection, because this is not going to help him at all,” Savage said of Trump. “This is utter garbage and Cruz is rightly offended. I’ve supported Trump and probably still will, but if he won’t disavow this guy Pecker and this story, I may withdraw my support from anyone in this campaign. … I am not going to support anyone who engages in assassination by innuendo.”

In response to the story, Ted Cruz said: “Well, David is good friends with Donald Trump. In fact, the National Enquirer has endorsed Donald Trump, has said he must be president … [and] years from now, when my daughters google this, they will read these lies.”

Two of the women named as carrying on affairs with Cruz, his former communications director Amanda Carpenter and Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson, who in 2012 consulted for Cruz’s Senate campaign in Texas, also denied the accusations.

Trump released his own statement Friday denying any involvement on his part in spreading the story.

“I have no idea whether or not the cover story about Ted Cruz in this week’s issue of the National Enquirer is true or not, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it, did not know about it, and have not, as yet, read it,” the statement said.

“I have nothing to do with the National Enquirer and unlike Lyin’ Ted Cruz I do not surround myself with political hacks and henchman and then pretend total innocence. Ted Cruz’s problem with the National Enquirer is his and his alone, and while they were right about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards, and many others, I certainly hope they are not right about Lyin’ Ted Cruz. I look forward to spending the week in Wisconsin, winning the Republican nomination and ultimately the presidency in order to Make America Great Again.”
