The National Border Patrol Council has hit the Obama administration hard in recent months over the president’s insistence that Border agents look the other way as illegal immigrants flood across the nation’s southern border. The current administration contends that disgruntled agents should look for a new job. Meanwhile, one GOP presidential candidate is taking a far different position.
Stephen Miller, senior policy advisor to the Donald Trump presidential campaign, said recently that the Border Patrol union will have a direct line to the president if Trump wins the general election.
Here’s what Miller told Breitbart about the issue in a radio interview:
I am here today to say that we are going to work closely, directly, and intimately with the NBPC to develop a border policy for this nation. We are going to make sure they have the resources they need to get this job done. They are going to be sitting with us to craft a policy that works for America and for them. We are going to protect the Border Patrol agents. We are going to protect their mission. We are going to make sure that we secure the border once and for all. The NBPC will never again have a back seat in our nation’s border policy.
That’s pretty major news considering how the Obama administration has intentionally marginalized criticism from the group representing the nation’s Border agents.
National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd told lawmakers last month that the Obama administration has ordered immigration agents to release any suspected illegal immigrant who claims to have been in the country since January 2014 without further question.
“Simply put the new policy makes mandatory the release — without a [Notice to Appear] of any person arrested by the Border Patrol for being in the country illegally, as long as they don’t have a previous felony arrest and conviction and as long as they claim to been continuously in the United States since January of 2014,” he said.
Judd said the policy is so open to abuse that the president “might as well abolish our immigration laws altogether.”
Upon hearing Judd’s concerns, Obama Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske said agents who are concerned should simply quit their jobs.
“If you really don’t want to follow the directions of your superiors, including the president of the United States and the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, then you really do need to look for another job,” he said.
But Judd hasn’t relented in expressing agent concerns about the Obama administration’s dangerous border policies.
During House testimony Tuesday, Judd told lawmakers that the lax immigration enforcement is likely opening up the nation to terror attacks.
In fiscal year 2015, Border Patrol arrested five people from Afghanistan and 57 from Pakistan.
As the world continues to witness terror attacks committed by people from those very regions, the Obama administration is downplaying the influx of illegal immigrants from the Middle East.
And this year, the number of people coming from terror hotbeds is already far higher.
“In the first five months of this fiscal year, the United States Border Patrol has arrested 18 from Afghanistan [and] 79 from Pakistan,” Judd told lawmakers.
