Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton
The message from the campaign trail in Iowa could very well be: Donald Trump pays his bills; Hillary Clinton doesn’t. That’s the take-away from Marshalltown’s police chief, anyway, who said Clinton has yet to pay the overtime charge and accompanying expenses associated with Bill Clinton’s speech in the area in mid-January, and with her own campaign event in late January.
Trump, however, has paid, he said.
As WHO-TV reported, Marshalltown Police Chief Michael Tupper said he sent the Clinton campaign a letter on February 3 detailing the charges for security details that were requested by her campaign for nearly $2,700. After receiving no response, he sent a followup letter.
“I think the most frustrating part is these events cost a lot of money for our communities and it’s not just law enforcement that’s impacted by these events, but they’re very costly, especially for a small town like Marshalltown, a small police force,” Tupper said, in the local news. “They distract us from the other duties of the day and we’re happy to help out, but we don’t have unlimited financial resources that can cover all these security requests.”
He also said his department doesn’t even request reimbursement for all the expenses – just the costs related to overtime.
“That doesn’t cover the costs that I incurred with captains and lieutenants and supervisors planning the event or detectives getting ready for the event, pre-event,” he said. “I just ask for my expense in overtime for the day of the event.”
The Trump campaign, on the other hand, shines in Marshalltown when it comes to paying its tab.
Trump held a rally in Marshalltown on the same day as his Democratic front-runner counterpart, Clinton. And his locally provided services cost about $3,600.
Tupper said Trump’s already paid – a historic first in terms of speed, he added.
“In my 23 year career, the Trump campaign actually paying this large bill is the first time that’s happened to me in my career,” Tupper said, WHO-TV reported. “I’ve been doing this job for 23 years and quite honest, the Trump campaign actually reimbursing for these kinds of expenses is the first time that’s ever happened to me in my entire career, with one exception.”
Tupper said Sen. Bernie Sanders actually paid up front for his campaign event in Marshalltown in January.
“We have limited resources here,” he said. “This money is coming out of the City of Marshalltown general fund, the taxpayers of Marshalltown are covering these expenses and we just don’t have the kind of unlimited resources that one might expect to cover these unexpected events.”
A spokesperson for the Clinton campaign said they’ve not received an invoice from the Des Moines Police Department for services rendered, but will pay as soon as they do.
