Sen. Marco Rubio
Sen. Marco Rubio’s numbers heading into Tuesday’s contest in Florida put him so far behind his competitors that one Republican strategist was already concluding: He’s not just on weak legs – he’s already down and out.
“It’s not a matter of do or die – it’s done,” Florida Republican strategist Chris Ingram said, the Hill reported. “If you believe the polls, all are consistently, except one, showing him losing in double digits. How do you overcome that? Can that many polls be wrong?”
Rubio is behind front-runner Donald Trump by double digits in some polls, a somewhat shocking reality for many who, just a few months ago, saw a star-powered political future for the 44-year-old senator.
Rubio hasn’t finished above third place since the Nevada caucuses, falling behind in 17 of 21 primaries held in recent weeks.
He’s tried to shift up his campaign messaging and take on Trump in a more aggressive manner – a style that didn’t suit with his supporters, and he soon after quit that attacks with a public apology. Super Tuesday wasn’t kind to him, and media reports in its wake suggested even his own campaign people were urging him to drop his White House bid before the campaign hit his home state of Florida, in order to preserve his political future from what most analysts predicted as his most embarrassing loss.
“It’s a huge embarrassment not to win your state outright when there are, not counting Trump as a Floridian, no other Floridians in the race,” Ingram said, the Hill reported. “While it’s not the whole story, it’s something of a referendum on him.”
